Beware of the Super Moon!

Dont let the Super moon haunt you
The term Super moon

It is also called a lunar perigee that was later dubbed a “super moon” by astrologer Richard Nolle back in the 1970s. The term is used to describe a new or full moon at 90% or more of its closest orbit to Earth. Next week, it will be at 100%.

What is the world thinking about Super moon?

Scientist all around the globe are expecting a larger than normal full moon on March 19. On March 19, 2011 the Moon will pass by Earth at a distance of 356,577 kilometers (221,567 miles) this is the closest it will get in last 18 years. Scientists are saying that once Super Moon occurs this week, Earth’s natural orbiting satellite will be positioned and seen closer from below much closer. There had been number of cases that when ever a “super moon” phenomenon is expected, disasters rock the planet Earth, there were super moons in 1955, 1974, 1992, and 2005 and, in each of these years, there were extreme events of nature–of one kind or another.

Within days of the 2005 super moon, for example, a 9.2 magnitide  earthquake struck Indonesia. Then there was Hurricane Katrina later that year that battered the American coast and brought massive damage to the country. Last week, just nine days before another super moon, came the Japanese earthquake, killing perhaps thousands of people and triggering a horrific tsunami. It is said to be the fifth largest earthquake ever recorded in living memory. Many Chinese bloggers are saying that this will be the end of world with disasters following the “super moon phenomenon” but that seems highly unlikely as in the past too there were many hypes and hoax about the world coming to an end like in the 1990s and Y2K bug.

Effects of super moon in Karachi

Tides could be high to very high than normal around the coast of Pakistan on March 19. But no tsunami-like disaster is likely. Tides are always higher during the full moon these tides are called spring tides

In the end

A moon can’t cause a geological event like an earthquake, but it will definitely cause abnormal high tides. If high tides combine with extreme weather conditions, then damage will be expected to the coastal areas of any part of the world so don’t let the super moon haunt you.

  1. it was written in the Quran too……. that the sun n the moon will come really close to the earth and then disasters will strike the planet…. i say ask forgiveness from the Lord……:(

  2. A really interesting article. Complete with myth and science.

When the moon comes closer to the earth, all this means is that the gravitational force between the earth and the moon increases (Newton’s Law of gravitation, masses remain the same, while the distance between their centers has increased). This can definitely have an impact on earth.

Though to what extent this will effect the earth is open to debate. As not much is known about the interaction of forces, and the whole gravitational model becomes immensely complex. All that is certain is that it does effect the earth, and hence its core.

Serious break through in this phenomenon is not possible as the theory of unifying the gravitational, magnetic and electric forces is still not possible.

  3. A full moon causing strong waves on the coast of Karachi has always fascinated me. It will be interesting to see if does happen on the ‘Super moon’.

    1. Considering that it will last for a mere 8 hours, I doubt that there will be any significant impact on the climate.
However, if it were to last for a substantial amount of time, then things would seriously start to heat up!
