On March 11, 20,000 people were dead. Today the country marks the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami as the country slowly tries to recover.

The nation observed a moment of silence at 2:46 pm, the exact time the earthquake battered the coast of Japan while people bowed their head to grief the dead.
